Summary

The world is too complex to understand. I believe this is the main idea of the video. When things are overly complicated Americans tend to not do the research to understand but lean on media for every piece of information regarding other countries or situations. The song that was playing in the beginning of the video stated. “I watch CNN, but I don’t think I can tell you the difference between Iraq and Iran.” This is alarming because we were at war with one of the countries and in political disagreement with the other. Iraq was being overrun by the Taliban, not all citizens of Iraq are against America. Just a radical group of individuals called the Taliban.  In our ignorance anyone with a hijab or with middle eastern descent we labeled them as a terrorist. Especially after the world trade centers were destroyed. President Bush labeled an entire country as evil ones instead of expressing the difference from the Taliban Iraqis and Afghanis. “Since September 11th, the rhetoric of good and evil has been used to pump up support for US policies.” It was a rhetoric for the people of America to want to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.

Solutions

Possible solutions include, properly educating oneself before having an opinion. Once you understand media, the job of media is to push narratives. It’s our job as consumers to decipher truth from lies. It’s also our job not to believe everything we hear. We have to do the research or you’re going to be a puppet regurgitating everything you hear. The main role of mass media

What is the main role of mass media? “The key function of mass media is to communicate various messages through television, movies, advertising, radio, the internet, magazines, and newspapers.” – (https://www.google.com/search?q=whats+the+point+of+media&safe=active&rlz=)

Another solution is forming your own opinion, which is what I like to do. For example, a new movie comes out and people rave and say it’s the best movie ever. I don’t immediately go and watch the movie. I take my time and read some backstory on the movie, who the director is, who are the main actors, and what is the story about. After a about a month or two I then go watch the movie and formulate my own opinion. Half the time I forgot what the critics and people raved about, so I can then watch the film with no bias opinions. End Game the Marvel movie was horrible to me, but I know people who says it’s awesome. “Avengers: Endgame has not just been a success at the box office - it has also drawn widespread critical acclaim. Reviews when it was released spawned descriptions such as "glorious", "irresistible", "intensely satisfying" and "masterful". Its score on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is over 90%”. – (https://www.google.com/search?safe=active&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS888US888&sxsrf)

Power Dynamics

Films and media tend to push narratives and gives the audience an idea before they can have an idea for themselves. For example, the film showed us how children were being patriotic before even understanding what the country stands for. America has the power dynamic to make everyone think that it’s this powerful country for liberty and justice for all. When in reality the narrative is skewed, and injustice was how this country was built. Mistreating people that are not white is a repeating trend through history. 2009 was the first time a person of non-white descent was elected President of the United States. History shows that even Japanese were discriminated against and placed in camps during World War II. “Japanese internment camps were established during World War II by President Franklin D. Roosevelt through his Executive Order 9066. From 1942 to 1945, it was the policy of the U.S. government that people of Japanese descent, including U.S. citizens, would be incarcerated in isolated camps.” – (https://www.google.com/search?q=japenese+prsion+camps&rlz)

It’s so many examples we have of the power dynamic being in favor of white males.
